Can teeth tell us about a person and what their personality is?

27 March · 3 minutes

You may think that teeth are simply used for eating, but the shape of our teeth, their positioning, and the condition that they’re in can reveal certain personality traits, indicate any health problems, or even identify our age or biological sex. For example, if we have crooked teeth, vampire teeth, or even a gap in our teeth, it could be an indicator of certain personality traits.

According to Dr. Khaled Kasem, the Chief of Orthodontics at Impress, our teeth can reveal more about our personalities than we realise...

Read on to find out what different types of teeth can say about you and see if you identify with what your teeth indicate.

Personality traits of people with a gap in their teeth

So what kind of personality traits do you have if you have a gap in your teeth or between your front teeth?

Gaps in the teeth, otherwise known as diastemas, can be caused by a variety of factors such as natural growth, the size or shape of your teeth, or, in more serious cases, by gum disease. As gum disease is often a result of poor oral hygiene, gaps in the teeth could indicate that the person is laid-back.

Having a gap between your front teeth can indicate a self-confident personality, especially if you’re not afraid to show it off. In some cultures or beliefs, a gap between the front teeth can even indicate good fortune, so you can consider yourself lucky if you have one!

Personality of people with crooked teeth

Some people can develop crooked teeth or they can become gradually crooked as a result of overcrowding. Crookedness may be mild in some cases but can become severe. If you have teeth that are overcrowded or crooked, it could indicate that you have a disorganised or chaotic personality. Experiencing overcrowded or crooked teeth may be a sign that you need to slow down and take things easy.

What teeth grinding can tell us about how you’re feeling

For people who experience bruxism, otherwise known as teeth grinding or clenching, the condition can reveal itself through worn-down teeth, chipped teeth, headaches and jaw pain. Bruxism can be an involuntary reaction to some emotions and can indicate that a person is anxious, angry about something, or fearful.

If you’re experiencing bruxism, you should seek the advice of a dentist on how to treat it so that you can avoid any further dental health issues or pain.

Receding gums: what they can say about you

Gum recession, also known as gingival recession refers to when the gums are weakened and they pull back from the teeth, exposing more of the root of the teeth. It can be caused by genetics, but could also be a result of smoking, brushing teeth too hard or teeth grinding, all of which indicate that a person could be quite anxious.

Although gingival recession is not a very common condition, it should be treated promptly as it could lead to more serious issues with the gums or even permanent tooth loss.

How discoloured or yellowing teeth might reveal your attitude

So what do discolouration and yellowing of your teeth say about your personality and health? Yellowing of the teeth could indicate that you’re a little too laid-back when it comes to taking care of your oral health. It’s a sign of tooth decay and should be treated promptly. You should arrange a visit with your dentist so that they can assess the level of decay and treat it accordingly, and you should ensure to follow a proper oral hygiene routine to avoid the situation worsening.

The shape of your teeth and your personality

The shape of your teeth like your molars, canines and incisors can also reveal aspects of your personality, your health, and even your gender and age.

Incisors: What do yours say about you?

Your two front teeth, also called your enlarged central incisors, usually indicate your age. Younger people tend to have more rectangular teeth with rounded corners, whereas older people have square teeth with sharper corners, which become shorter with age.

Your lateral incisors are next to your central incisors, and the shape and size of these teeth indicate the biological sex of the owner. Women tend to have shorter lateral incisors with rounder edges, while men have longer lateral incisors which are squared around the edges.

Canines: Do sharp canines or vampire teeth say anything about your personality?

The canine teeth can give us deeper insight into a person.

People with flatter canine teeth could be less assertive and prone to anxiety (as the teeth being worn down can indicate grinding), whereas people with sharp canine teeth, otherwise known as vampire teeth, are usually more confident and assertive.

Molars: Can they reveal how you’re feeling?

As previously mentioned, bruxism or teeth grinding can show up in your teeth, through worn down molars and premolars, weakened enamel and pain. So if somebody has molars that are shorter than normal due to wear through teeth grinding, it can indicate that the person is stressed, anxious, or even competitive.

If you are experiencing teeth grinding, you should visit a dental specialist so that they can advise you on treatment options to avoid the situation worsening.
