What is overjet?

Overjet, also commonly referred to as buck or bunny teeth, occurs when the upper teeth project forward. It differs to an overbite, which is when there is a vertical overlap of your top teeth. In comparison, overjet refers to the horizontal distance between the upper front two incisors and their lower counterparts.

Causes of overjet

Find out more about the main causes of overjet.

Tongue thrusting

In periods of stress, or as a comfort mechanism, some people unconsciously push at the back of their teeth with their tongue. It's also called a reverse or immature swallow, and it can affect the position of the teeth and jaw if the tongue posture and function are incorrect.

Thumb-sucking

Prolonged thumb-sucking or dummy use in infancy can cause the upper teeth to be pushed forward.

Genetics

Inherited traits such as jaw size and tooth position can cause things such as overjet, as certain individuals may be predisposed to having a more promiment upper jaw, and smaller lower jaw.

Smile with ease, not embarassment

If you're fed up with feeling like there isn't a way to fix front teeth that protrude, you haven't visited the specialists at Impress yet.

Can I fix my teeth if they stick out?

Yes, you can. Despite what you might think, it’s more than a cosmetic concern. Overjet can affect your bite and oral health. Many people also feel self-conscious about their smile and minimise the exposure of their teeth.
