Posterior crossbite

Posterior crossbite is often caused by a wider lower jaw. It affects the teeth towards the back of the mouth, i.e., the molars and premolars, with the upper and lower jaw not fitting together well. This can lead to jaw slippage when biting.

Anterior crossbite

Either maxillary central or lateral incisors lingual (leaning to the tongue) can be crossed. It can be caused by either dental or skeletal misalignment. When the upper teeth sit behind the lower teeth when biting, instead of slightly covering them as they should, you experience an anterior crossbite.

Unilateral crossbite

Unilateral crossbite is typically due to a narrow maxillary dental arch and affects just one side of it. It's commonly what happens as a result of digit sucking, prolonged dummy use and obstructed upper airway.

Causes of crossbite

There are multiple reasons for crossbite. Find out what could be causing yours below.

What happens if a crossbite is not corrected?

If it is very severe, it can alter your facial proportions and cause visual imbalance, lisping, premature wear on your teeth and difficulty breathing. An incorrect jaw proportion can lead to tension, neck pain, migraines, and premature wear and tear on joints and teeth.
